Those of you who know me, know that in 1988 I lost my best friend, my three flatmates and my classmates from SU in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie Scotland. We were all Study Abroad students through the Division of International Programs Abroad at the Syracuse University London Center that year.
The long and the short of it is that the tragedy changed my life. Forever.
July 31st would have been Suzanne Marie Miazga’s 49th birthday. 49. Can you believe it?
She was just 22 the last time I saw her.
She took me to the airport, in London, so that I could spend Christmas in Germany with my then boyfriend and love of my life. The man I was sure I’d be with forever.
Things change. Life comes at you fast, as they say on TV.
Young Lives Cut Short
On December 21, 1988 Pam Am transatlantic flight 103 from Frankfurt to Detroit via London and New York was destroyed by a terrorist bomb, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew on board. Large parts of the plane landed on residential areas of Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 11 more people on the ground.
Today, being Suzanne’s birthday, is a special day for me every year. Suzanne was my best friend. We shared a room together in our flat, we traveled together, she picked up my mail at the SU Center for me because all my classes were at the Art Studios. We shopped for and cooked meals together.
The best way to keep the memory of people you love alive, is to share their story. Thank you for taking the time to read this blog, to click the links, and to help me keep their memory alive. Syracuse University has done an absolutely amazing job honoring the memory of my fellow 35 classmates. I can’t say enough wonderful things about my University!
Happy Birthday Suzanne
As it turns out my birthday is July 13 and her birthday is July 31, it’s always easy to remember, just a flip flop of numbers. Best Friends Forever.
All of our lives can change forever in an instant. A second. Today is a day that I always remember that, remember her, remember them, remember London.
